As discussed at our Sacramento Coaches Meeting in October. We are asking tournaments to:

  1. Run three divisions at our Tournaments.
  2. Divisions should consist of Elementary, JV, Varsity. We will not be running novice divisions at our tournaments this year. Novice middle school wrestlers should be put into  the JV division. Novice Elementary should be put in the Elementary Division.
  3. Tournaments can be run by USA wrestling divisions (ex. 6U, 8U, 10U,12U, Middle School). Tournament directors need to be aware that having multiple divisions will dilute brackets and can sometimes lead to 2-3 man brackets. Having 3 divisions and a possible 4th for girls is the best way to separate wrestlers.
  4. Elementary wrestlers can move up divisions but Junior High Wrestlers cannot move down to wrestle in the Elementary division.
  5. We have had too much dilution over the years and we want to try and correct that. If your wrestler is a border line JV/Varsity wrestler please try to move him up to Varsity. This will strengthen our Varsity Tournaments and overall wrestling in the Sacramento Area.
  6. We are very aware that paying $20-$30 for a tournament and going 0-2 is not good for the sport of wrestling. Tournaments are asked to either run a 0-2 bracket for Varsity wrestlers or have an extra mat for athletes to get more mat time that didn’t win a match at a tournament.
  7. Elementary and JV wrestling matches should be pooled, at the same mat, and condensed in a 1-3 hour time slot. This will make it easier for parents who are new to the sport to enjoy wrestling, and not be there for all day long tournaments.
  8. Match Times should be 1.5 minute periods for Varsity Championship Matches. JV and Novice should at least be 1 minute periods.
  9. TOC Tournaments need all wrestlers to be registered through Track Wrestling for the 2023-2024 season. If you are concerned about the percentage that Track Wrestling charges for wrestler registration, then add the percentage to the tournament registration fee. All wrestlers at the latest need to be registered by Wednesday the week of the tournament by 9pm PST. No exceptions. We want uniformity for all TOC Tournaments that will establish patterns that will be better for tournaments, coaches, parents and wrestlers. We also recommend that Non TOC tournaments also conform to these changes.
  10. Headgear should be worn for all TOC Varsity Matches. These are rules established by middle schools. Elementary and JV division headgear is recommended for tournaments.
  11. Wrestling tournaments need to be wrestled on Saturday as much as possible. Club tournaments can be run on Sunday. Middle Schools don’t allow wrestling on Sunday. We are here to help promote the growth of Middle School Wrestling.
  12. If a team is running a TOC Tournament in the Sacramento Area, they need to make sure to attend the Sacramento Area Regional Tournament in February. Receiving money from Area wrestlers for a tournament but not attending the Regional Tournament does not promote the sport of wrestling in the Sacramento Area.
  13. Tournaments need to be established for a few years before becoming a TOC tournament. Being able to run a tournament efficiently with high volume is a must before a tournament becomes a TOC tournament. Likewise if a tournament has a track record of being run poorly the “TOC” name will be removed upon discussion with Rod Hedlund and Sacramento Area Directors.
